Soil nails are used when soil slopes, excavations or retaining walls need reinforcement. Typically, this is done by using steel reinforcement bars. First, the bars are installed in a pre-drilled hole. Then, they are grouted or drilled and grouted into place simultaneously. Soil nail walls are normally installed un-tensioned and at a slight downward inclination. At the surface, isolated soil nail heads or a rigid or flexible face (often times shotcrete) may be used.
