The Paoli Train Station project presented several logistical and safety challenges requiring thoughtful planning and innovative solutions for Wagman’s Geotechnical Construction group. Temporary shoring with tiebacks were installed along the north parking lot, which supported a fiber optic line and vault. This allowed the existing train platform to remain in use while the new building was constructed and connected down at track level. Temporary shoring was installed for the center platform’s elevator pits, as well as micropiles for the elevators and platform themselves. Additionally, bars needed to be installed in 10’ lengths to maintain a required minimum clearance of three feet from the disabled wires.

Key Challenges & Project Details

  • Four live overhead catenary wires and train traffic made installing the platform piles particularly challenging. This work had to be performed at night with the power disabled on three alternating wires, and services disabled on one of two tracks at a time, depending on which side work was being performed.
