Wagman’s Geotechnical Construction group furnished and installed nine micropiles arranged around the existing foundation of the three-legged telecommunications tower for The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) to increase the tower capacity. Production drilling and grouting was preceded by a test pile, installed and tested near the tower to confirm design. Wagman mobilized a mini-drill to reduce the footprint required and to allow access under the tower. Wagman successfully completed this challenging project on time, allowing the general contractor to complete their work and the PTC to add to the tower.
Key Challenges & Project Details
- Access to the work area was made difficult by a number of factors, including a narrow, steep, gravel access road that led up to the tower location on the top of a ridge; and the existing tower structure and associated appurtenances ice bridges and cable trays.
- Drilling and grouting were difficult due to the hardness of the rock.
