Wagman Geotechnical Construction Project

Hazel National Landing

  • Location

    Arlington, VA

  • Duration

    September 2022 - January 2023

Wagman’s Geotechnical Construction group was contracted by Balfour Beatty to install 790 each, 16” diameter auger cast piles for two, 16 story residential and retail buildings in Arlington, VA. During this project, Wagman performed two compression load tests to verify the initial and revised pile design. The piles extended 55’ – 62’ below the 20 foot excavation into the underlying Potomac Clay.

Near the end of the project, the team had to overcome site conditions, caused by unforeseen ground water. This resulted in working off of crane mats, strategically placed each day. Additionally, the project team configured and build a ramp to safely demobilize the crane from the 20 foot cut.

Key Challenges & Project Details

  • The jobsite was in a 20’ excavation, which lead to ground water and site logistic challenges while demobilizing.
  • The Potomac Clay formation created tough drilling conditions, especially after the piles needed to be extended further into the formation post test results.
