The Meadows is an innovative design based on the “pocket neighborhood” concept that has increasingly gained popularity within senior living communities. The design supports a growing number of studies illustrating that greater social engagement and intellectual stimulation aids mental and emotional wellness, and even translates into longer lifespans.
In the “pocket neighborhood” model, small groupings of houses, or cottages, are gathered around a shared open space such as a courtyard or garden. This helps promote a greater sense of community and provides a greater opportunity for social interaction than the traditional layouts of most suburbs.
The expansion included the construction of 27 duplex independent living cottages. Each cottage features geothermal heating and cooling, with floor plans ranging from 1,200 – 1,700 SF. Residents had the option of selecting front or rear loaded garages, and an optional second story. Each cottage is clustered around and facing a common green space. Spacious front porches bordered by small, private gardens open onto the common area encouraging homeowners to visit and gather with neighbors.
The project was completed in three phases. Phase 1 of the project featured 20 cottages, Phase 2 featured 21, and Phase 3 featured 14.
