(York, PA) Wagman Heavy Civil, Inc. accepted three awards at the 2023 Design-Build Institute of America Mid-Atlantic Region (DBIA-MAR) awards ceremony on Wednesday, November 15. The ceremony recognizes the best design-build projects in the region that demonstrate teamwork, effective schedule and cost performance, advanced and innovative project delivery, and design-build best practices.
The MD 32 Dualization project, located in Howard County, MD, received a DBIA-MAR Award of Merit in the Infrastructure category. This $85M design-build project for the Maryland State Highway Administration, included converting six miles of a two-lane road into a four-lane divided highway, greatly reducing traffic congestion, and providing enhanced safety for motorists. Three existing bridge structures were replaced, as well as 4,500 SF of stream relocation of multiple tributaries to the Middle Patuxent River, including the relocation of the river itself.
The I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project also received a DBIA-MAR Award of Merit in the Infrastructure category, in addition to receiving the DBIA-MAR Best in Process Award. This was a Special Recognition category, which evaluated the design-build delivery process from development to procurement to execution, and how the approach influenced project results. This $113M design-build project for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), relieved congestion on a highly traveled portion of I-95 near the Rappahannock River, with an average of 150,000 vehicles traveling on it each day. It included the design and construction of three new general-purpose lanes for I-95 southbound and conversion of the three existing lanes to collector-distributer lanes. In addition, new bridges were built over Route 17 and the Rappahannock River, parallel to the existing I-95 southbound bridges to carry the new lanes.
