Claymont Regional Transportation Center Wins American Transportation Award

(York, PA) Wagman Heavy Civil is excited to announce that the Harris B. McDowell, III Claymont Regional Transportation Center, located in Claymont, DE, recently won the 2024 Quality of Life/Community Development Award – medium size project, for the NASTO Region at the Regional 2024 America’s Transportation Awards.

After winning the regional award, the project is now competing among the other top 12 finalists nationwide for the Grand Prize and People’s Choice Award. The Grand Prize will be selected by an independent panel of judges, while the People’s Choice Award will go to the project with the most online votes from the public. Winners will be announced at the 2024 AASHTO Annual Meeting this fall.

These awards help to showcase the importance of transportation infrastructure in four categories. In the Quality of Life/Community Development category, criteria included innovative projects that provide a better solution to connect their communities to businesses, jobs, healthcare facilities and recreational activities, while encouraging a mix of transportation modes. The project was one of 106 nominations submitted by 39 Departments of Transportation.

The $70 million design-build project for the Delaware Department of Transportation replaced the aging Claymont Train Station, the first SEPTA stop in Delaware, which offers service to Wilmington, Newark and Philadelphia. The state-of-the-art transportation center features two ADA-compliant passenger platforms with canopies, a plaza with ticketing and waiting areas, restrooms, at-grade parking, electronic vehicle charging stations, a three-tiered parking garage and an enclosed pedestrian bridge with views of Philadelphia Pike and the Delaware River.

Additionally, access improvements include new auxiliary lanes, traffic signals, a roundabout, sidewalks, and a
multi-use path that enhances safety and minimizes congestion for transit buses, motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists.
