Wagman Heavy Civil Project

Route 5 Richmond Riverfront

  • Location

    Richmond, VA

  • Duration

    January 2017 - July 2017

  • Owner

    VDOT

The $2.8M VDOT K81 bridge replacement project for the Virginia Department of Transportation is located along Route 5 (East Main Street) in Richmond, VA. The bridge is over the Norfolk Southern railroad and adjacent to the CSX / Amtrak railroad trestle bridge, with both rail lines active throughout the day.

The project required temporary shoring of a private property line along Abutment B, and temporary shoring of Dominion power poles for support of excavation. Third party coordination between Wagman and the City of Richmond, City Department of Public Utilities, Norfolk Southern, CSX / Amtrak and adjacent property owners were critical to completing the project on time. The project began in January 2017 and was completed on time and opened to traffic in July 2017.

Key Challenges & Project Details

  • The existing bridge superstructure dated to 1913 and at one time had trolley tracks.
  • The existing bluestone abutment walls, part of the original structure, date back to the late 1800’s.
  • The project team worked diligently in and around overhead power lines, as well as a confined work space.
