Wagman Geotechnical Construction Project

Mount Vernon Mansion Revitalization

  • Location

    Mount Vernon, VA

  • Duration

    March 2023 - May 2026

Wagman’s Geotechnical Construction group was awarded the support of excavation contract for the Phase 1 work at George Washington’s Mount Vernon Mansion Revitalization project, followed by Phase 2.

The support of excavation was required to construct new underground vaults that will contain the HVAC system and controls. This will allow the mansion to maintain a conditioned environment designed to help aid in the preservation of the structure along with all the historical artifacts within the mansion.

Wagman designed and installed a pipe soldier pile, wood lagging and steel bracing system that allowed placement of soldier piles within a few feet of the historic mansion without impact to the structure or any interruption to the active tour groups visiting the site each day. A portion of the design also incorporated support of an existing concrete utility tunnel and providing bearing point for the needle beams used to support the mansion during renovations. The project site had a limited footprint within proximity to the existing mansion. The team coordinated with Mansion Revitalization team to ensure work was not impacting the structure.
