(York, PA) Wagman Heavy Civil, Inc. received the 2022 Engineering News Record (ENR) MidAtlantic Award of Merit in the Highway/Bridge category for the Route 7 and Battlefield Parkway Interchange project, located in Leesburg, VA. Wagman accepted the award on Tuesday, October 25 at the ENR MidAtlantic Regional Best Projects Awards Luncheon in Baltimore, MD.
The $60M Design-Build project for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) included the design and construction of a new interchange at Route 7 and Battlefield Parkway, replacing an at-grade signalized intersection. The Design-Build Team used an Alternate Technical Concept (ATC) for the single point urban interchange (SPUI). While most bridges for SPUI concept interchanges use steel girder superstructure, this project used an unconventional approach and designed a parallel, prestressed concrete framing system that increased the total bridge area, yet reduced both construction cost and schedule and improved long-term durability. This innovative design resulted in the widest bridge in Virginia without a longitudinal expansion joint. Averaging 100,000 vehicles daily, the new interchange provides traffic congestion relief, improved safety and enhanced mobility for bicyclists and pedestrians.
“I am very proud of the project team on this accomplishment,” states Greg Andricos, president and coo of Wagman Heavy Civil. “They safely delivered a high-quality interchange ahead of schedule, despite a global pandemic, and this award recognizes their hard work, dedication and collaboration.”
The ENR awards program is held annually and honors the best regional construction projects, decided upon by industry leaders. This is the second year in a row that Wagman Heavy Civil has received this award in the Highway/Bridge category.
